Business&Beer at Strand Brewing

Ready for Business and Beer

On Thursday, July 10, Business & Beer returned to Torrance’s original production brewery, Strand Brewing Company. Historically we have some of our largest turnouts when we visit Strand Brewing, but July’s meeting fell short of what we have grown accustomed. While the group was significantly smaller than expected, we did have at least one first timer and a couple returnees. When our groups are smaller it does give attendees the ability to learn a little more about each other and what they bring to the table as far as business is concerned. The next time they come to a Business & Beer gathering they will not feel like the ‘new guy’ since they did get an opportunity to meet a few people already.

Our August gathering of Business & Beer will be held at The Dudes’ Brewing Company on August 14 at 6:00 PM. The Dudes’ Brewing Company is located at 1840 W. 208th Street in Torrance. If you have heard that The Dudes’ do not have a tasting room yet, you heard right. The Dudes’ were granted a Conditional Use Permit back in May and are slowly working their way to making their tasting room a reality. I guess one might say that our Business & Beer gathering will be a soft soft-open for them. While I am not entirely sure how many beer options they will have available this should be a fun gathering, especially for those of you that have yet to visit the brewery itself. It is a very impressive setup; I think you will enjoy yourself. Judging by the responses we have received thus far, this should be a very well-attended event. We hope you can join us. The June 2014 gathering of Business & Beer networking group was held June 12 at El Segundo Brewing Company (ESBC), a production brewery located in El Segundo, California. Since El Segundo Brewing is the furthest away from most Business & Beer regulars it typically has the smallest turnouts but this particular gathering had a very respectable turnout with people coming from as far away as the San Fernando Valley. ESBC had been brewing and bottling for an upcoming event so there was a wide selection of brews available for sampling from their Citra Pale Ale to their Standard Crude Imperial Stout; there was virtually something for everybody. Thanks to El Segundo Brewing for hosting our event and keeping the brews flowing; and thanks to everyone that made it out. We always enjoy seeing you and hope to see you again soon. All the photos from the event can be found on CraftBeerGuy.com.

Our next meetup of Business & Beer will be held at Strand Brewing Company in Torrance on July 10 at 6:00 PM. Strand Brewing Company is the oldest production brewery in the South Bay and have been supporters of Business & Beer since its inception two years ago. It is hard to believe that our July meeting marks two years that we have been doing this. It has definitely been an interesting time and we have met a lot of very nice people, had some great beers and have done business and helped set up many business connections. I cannot wait to see what happens in the next two years. You can find the link for more details about the July gathering of Business & Beer on the front page. You can also follow us on Facebook or sign up to our mailing list. Continue reading

Business & Beer at Smog City Brewing

Business & Beer at Smog City Brewing

On May 8, Business & Beer made a return visit to Torrance production brewery Smog City Brewing Company. It was an interesting mix of people that have been coming since day one as well as several first time visitors. There were people coming and going throughout the evening which is fine since our gatherings are informal and there is no reason why someone should not feel free to stay for as long or as little as their personal schedule allows. The one constant of our meetings is the drawing for the free beer which always happens around 7:00 PM, so if you can only stay for a while, that is when you want to try to make it. ;)

Our June meeting of Business & Beer will be held at El Segundo Brewing Company on June 12 from 6:00-8:00 PM. El Segundo Brewing Company is one of the more hop centric craft breweries in the South Bay but they have been expanding their brewing horizons and now have such brews as their Station No.1, a malty red ale that is really quite delicious. If you have never visited El Segundo Brewing Company I highly recommend getting a flight so you can try a little of everything before deciding what your favorite is. El Segundo Brewing Company is located at 140 Main Street in El Segundo. You can find all relevant details at http://businessnbeer.com/el-segundo-brewing-company-june-12/.

Remember, Business & Beer is the informal business networking group with no rules such as mandatory meetings or dues. You do not need a special invitation to bring your friends, everyone is welcome. Bring your business cards and a willingness to network, we will provide the people to talk to as well as access to some great local brews. You can see all the photos from our May gathering at Smog City Brewing on CraftBeerGuy.com.

On April 10 the Business & Beer networking group returned to Torrance production brewery, Monkish Brewing Company. Monkish Brewing Company is a local microbrewery that specializes in Belgian style ales; it also happens to be Tanya’s favorite local craft brewery, and since it was her birthday it made sense to hold our April gathering there. The fact that Vella Pizza was on hand with their mobile brick oven pretty much sealed the deal for her. We had a nice turnout with quite a few first time attendees joining us. One thing is for certain; Monkish is sure a lot busier these days than when we first started bringing Business & Beer there two years ago. It is good to see our local craft beer scene doing so well.

The May gathering of Business & Beer will be held May 8 at Smog City Brewing Company in Torrance. Smog City Brewing is a production brewery with an extremely wide variety of craft beers available. I would not be over-stating it to suggest that they pretty much have every style of beer you can think of covered; from Pilsners to barrel aged porters and about everything in-between. If you have not been to Smog City lately I am positive they have something you have yet to try. As they are a tasting room, they do not serve food but you are welcome to bring your own or have something delivered. Continue reading

Absolution Brewing Company

Torrance’s newest production brewery

The March gathering of the Business & Beer networking group was held at the latest production brewery to open in Torrance, Absolution Brewing Company (ABC). As ABC officially opened a mere two weeks before our event, this was the first opportunity for many of the Business & Beer attendees to sample the beers being produced by them. Tanya had obtained some spent grains from them ahead of time which she dehydrated and turned into flour which was used in the baking of the treats she provided to attendees and other Absolution Brewing customers. We had a nice group show up for Business & Beer and they all seemed to enjoy the beer, networking and treats that were available. Head Brewer Wes McCain took time from his busy brewing schedule to give us a “tour” of the brew house and to tell us about ABC’s future plans. I think it is safe to say that Absolution will be around for a long while and I cannot wait to see what happens with their future brews.

Three Absolution Brewing beers

A wide range of beers to choose from

Our April gathering of Business & Beer will be held April 10, 2014 at Monkish Brewing Company. There are a couple reasons that we chose Monkish Brewing, not the least of which is the beer. We have not brought the group to Monkish in six months and if that was the last time you went there, you really should come out. Henry has been turning out even more amazing brews and has started bottling some of them. Many, if not all, of them are great for aging. The range of Belgian-styled brews includes light blondes, a couple hoppy pale ales, dubbels, tripels, quads and more. They have really expanded their tap list and it can be tough to choose what to get. The other reason we picked them is that Tanya wanted food, and Monkish always has a food truck on Thursdays. On April 10 they will have Vella Pizza; they have a mobile brick oven and prepare your pizza on the spot. I have heard that if you have vegetables you grow and want to have some on your pizza, they are more than willing to add your produce. Continue reading
