Week seven of Business N Beer was held at the Alpine Inn at Alpine Village, located in Torrance, CA. While the Alpine Inn does not exactly fall under the description of micro brewery, brewpub or gastropub, the Alpine Inn is a specialty restaurant, serving German food, and they have about 15 beers on tap so we decided to give them a try for the Business N Beer circuit. As our attendance was about double of the previous week, I think the addition of specialty restaurants that provide a wide variety of beers on tap is probably a good move.
Attendees included several regulars, one or two occasional attendees and a couple new visitors. As it turned out, Alpine Inn was providing musical entertainment in the form of not one but three different rock/reggae/punk bands. We had arrived early and I saw the band setting up so I asked one of the members what time they started playing. He told me they started between 8-8:30 so I figured this would not be an issue. What I did not realize is that he was in the third of the three bands. While the music was entertaining and I could see several of our group were getting into it, it did make it a little difficult with each other. As a result, I was unable to really talk to the new people; I hope they had a good time and will return.
As I noted above, our attendance is back up after low numbers at El Segundo Brewing Company, and this has caused me to come to a few conclusions. The first is that we have definitely found our boundaries as far as geographical locations are concerned. El Segundo is as far north as we will want to go; and Alpine Village is as far south as we will venture. Freeway close is not that close at 6:00 PM on a weekday. Continue reading

Our fourth Business N Beer gathering was held August 2 at Strand Brewing Company in Torrance. Coincidentally, it was also International IPA Day, so it was pretty appropriate that we met at Strand Brewing as they have a couple really nice IPA’s in their Atticus and Black IPA. Our group may have had a few less people than last week, but again it consisted of people that had shown up for one of our previous events and several newcomers. In addition, we had a few people wander over from the main tasting room to ask what Business N Beer was all about. It seems most people really like the idea and it shows with all the new faces we are seeing.
We would like to thank our host, Rich Marcello and Strand Brewing Company for having us, and special thanks to Phil and Debbie Walls for the pizza. Congratulations to Tim Thompson for winning the door prize this week, a free craft beer at one of our future events. Speaking of future events, our next event will be held at The Rockefeller in Hermosa Beach. The Rockefeller is a gastropub with 24 craft beers on tap. They also have some specials that will coincide with our event so I can assure you this will be a fun night. Bring a date and stay a while.
Be sure to sign up for our mailing list so you can keep in the loop and follow us on Facebook so you always know what is going on and where. As usual, you can find all the photos from Business N Beer at Strand Brewing on GotBaddog.com.
Week three of Business N Beer found us at our first micro brewery, Monkish Brewing Company in Torrance. Monkish Brewing specializes in Belgian style ales and beers, and the owner and brewer, Henry Nguyen does a great job of it. They have only been open for a few months but I can see that they are becoming quite popular as I see more and more people in their tasting room and I see several gastropubs carrying their products. It is nice to see good things happen to good people.
This was our largest gathering yet, with 17 or 18 people showing up. Unlike the second gathering at Abigaile which had no returnees from our first gathering, Thursday’s meet-up included several people that had come to the Select Beer gathering, several more that had come to our meeting at The Brewery at Abigaile with close to half of the attendees being first timers. It seems to me that Business N Beer is doing exactly as we hoped; bringing people together to do business while enjoying an American craft beer. And it is growing weekly.
Our next Business N Beer meet-up will be Thursday, August 2 at 6:00 PM; and will be held at Strand Brewing Company, also in Torrance. This is another micro brewery, which means they do not serve food. We will likely bring in some snacks, but you can bring food or have it delivered. There is plenty of street parking and there are no meters! We hope to see you there. You can see all the photos from our night at Monkish Brewing on GotBaddog.com
